Special Olympics
Every year our school has been sending special education students to compete in the
“Special Olympics”. Our school is co-joined with a team from Cedar Falls, called “The Tigers”.
There’s three different sports that students can compete: bowling, basketball, and track & field.
Our school recently sent three students to districts, in Waterloo, for the bowling portion. Morgan
Brown, Jennifer Lassuy, and Jennifer Gutknecht. State bowling for Special Olympics will be
held in mid-November. Connie Doughan, special education teacher, has graciously volunteered
to drive the students to Cedar Falls when they have practices and serves as their coach. She
“enjoys watching the students succeed, but more importantly makes sure that they have fun.”
When I asked Jennifer Lassuey what her favorite part of being in Special Olympics she said, “I
enjoy meeting new people and making friends. I also love participating in the fun activities.”
When interviewing Mrs. Doughan she told me that the team have a motto not only for Special
Olympics, but also for Special Ed: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the
attempt.” This is a great motto for the students because it motivates them to try their best. There
will be more articles in the future concerning updates on the Special Olympics dates/events,
and other information about the students. Mrs. Doughan told me that they will be starting their
basketball practices in about a month
