Obituary

Nadine A. Stirler, 85, of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo, Iowa Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 31, 2011, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Reinbeck with Pastor Michael Wagnitz officiating. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery in Reinbeck. Visitation was held Wednesday, March 30, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with the family present to greet friends at French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Nadine was born May 13, 1925 in Tama County, the daughter of Ed and Emma (Tank) Boege. She grew up in the area of her birth and attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Reinbeck High School with the class of 1943.

On February 14, 1948, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Reinbeck, she was united in marriage to Walter (Wally) Stirler of Reinbeck. After their marriage they lived in the Lincoln/Gladbrook area for six years before moving to the Reinbeck area. Nadine worked at Mettlen’s, Bonacker’s grocery, Reinbeck School, Ken’s Bakery and Parkview Manor Nursing Home before retiring.

Surviving are her three daughters, Kandy Stirler of Reinbeck, Karen Stirler of Cedar Rapids and Jane Stirler of Cedar Rapids/Reinbeck; a sister, LaVon Keese of Des Moines and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was always an avid sports fan for Gladbrook-Reinbeck School along with musical and drama productions. She enjoyed canning, gardening and baking. She was always ready to go when her daughters said, “Let’s go.” She was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Reinbeck.

She is preceded in death by her husband, her parents (Ed and Emma Boege), a brother, Harold and a sister, LaRue.

John R. Holst, 65, of Reinbeck, Iowa, died Friday, March 25, 2011, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo Iowa. Memorial services were held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at St. Timothy Lutheran Church, 1 Thelma Court, Hudson, Iowa, with Pastor Scott Duffus officiating. Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2011, at French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the family. John Reid Holst was born in Anamosa, Iowa on June 15, 1945 to Marvin and Ruth Holst of Center Junction, Iowa. He attended school in Jones County and graduated from Midland High School in 1963. He attended Iowa State University and took classes in the Farm Management program. He returned to the farm of his grandparents and parents to raise a family of his own. He married Kathleen (Kathy) Renken in 1969 and together they raised four children, Jason (wife Michelle), Beth Hennes (husband Pat), Austin (wife Erin), and Autumn Craig (husband Travis).

John farmed with his father and brother, Gary, for many years before moving to the Waterloo area in 1985, eventually moving to Reinbeck in 2008. While living in the Waterloo area, he worked as a commodities broker and eventually began working with people with disabilities. John was a devoted helper to many people with disabilities both at work and in his personal life. He enjoyed the outdoors and open spaces, especially favoring summer vacations in the Minnesota north woods, either alone with Kathy or surrounded by his children and five grandsons.

John was preceded in death by his father and brothers, Robert and Gary. He is survived by his wife, mother, four children and their spouses, and five grandsons.

Mildred Lucile Anderson, 89, of Traer, Iowa, formerly of Reinbeck, died Thursday, March 24, 2011, at Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer, Iowa while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 28, 2011, at United Church of Christ, Reinbeck Iowa, with Rev. Joel Love and Pastor Cal Turner officiating. Burial followed at the Reinbeck Cemetery. Visitation was held from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 27, 2011, French Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. Memorials may be made Cedar Valley Hospice or the Alzheimer’s Association in Mildred’s name.

Mildred Lucile Guffey was born December 14, 1921 in Moberly, Missouri, to her parents William Arie and Flossie May (Gibson) Guffey. In 1941, she moved to Grinnell, Iowa, and worked at the local shoe factory. She was united in marriage to Clifford Leroy Anderson on January 18, 1950 in Grinnell, Iowa. They farmed in the Reinbeck and Traer areas until his death in 1979.

Mildred enjoyed gardening, reading, baking and traveling. She was well known for her homemade jelly, pickles and chocolate pie. She was a 50 year member of the United Church of Christ in Reinbeck.

Mildred is survived by her son, Bill (Penny) Anderson of Traer; two daughters, Nancy Pettit of Grundy Center, Karma (Dave) Wanamaker of Altoona, grandchildren; Bart(Tonya) Anderson and their children, Raelyn, Vincent and Samuel of Indianola, Bret (Rachel) Anderson and their children, Broderick, Graeme, Abbey and baby due in April of Marion, Amy Pettit of Council Bluffs, Krista Pettit of Grundy Center. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, sisters, Thelma and Ruby and brother, Walter.
