Pauline R. Halverson, 90 from Gladbrook died Friday, March 4, 2011 at Westbrook Acres in Gladbrook

Visitation was held at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook on Monday, March 7, 2011 from 4-7 PM. Service was held at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garwin on Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 10:30 AM. Burial was at Maple Hill Cemetery rural Gladbrook.

Pauline Rae Halverson was born June 10, 1920 in Geneseo Township in rural Buckingham, Iowa, daughter of Carl and Florence Speer Stouffer. She attended Consolidated School for 6 years, 2 years in Buckingham and graduated from Geneseo High School in 1937. She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls graduating with a 2 year teaching degree majoring in Elementary Education. She taught school in Dike, Hampton and Jesup. On December 29, 1945 she was married to Raphael Schmitz and they moved to Gladbrook where they farmed with Roy Koster. On June 3, 1949 Raphael was electrocuted and she moved with her 2 daughters to Geneseo where she taught for 5 years. On June 1, 1955 she married Harold Halverson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Gladbrook along with Harold’s two children. Three more children that were born of this marriage. On March 28, 1973 Harold died. While in Gladbrook Pauline worked for several local businesses including the Gladbrook Bowl for over 30 years; for H.D. Osbourne Vet Clinic; and was a bookkeeper for Kenny’s DX, Mooney’s DX, C.W. Gethmann Trucking and Lench Sanitation. She was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garwin where she served as Treasurer of the Rosary Society for 30 years and served on the church Parish Council. She was also a member the Women’s Club holding offices of President and Treasurer for 15 years. She served on the original Gladbrook Housing Board from 1976-1988 serving as Treasurer for 10 years and managed the complex from 1988 to 1995. On July 9, 1995 Pauline suffered a stroke and was hospitalized for 3 months in Iowa City, Waterloo, and Grundy Center. On March 2, 1996 she moved to Eastbrook Apartments and currently was a resident of Westbrook Acres. Pauline’s death came at the care center on Friday evening, March 4, 2011 at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughters Kathie Armijo and Donna Brady; daughter-in-law Didee Halverson; and a brother Dean Stouffer. She is survived by her children. John (Barb) Halverson of Marshalltown, Carolyn (Bob) Dalton of Chatham, Ill., Linda Halverson (Mike Wilhelm) of Des Moines, Diana (Mark) Volkens of Gladbrook and Dean Halverson of Beaman; son-in-laws Dan (Judy) Brady of Onalaska, Wisc. and Jose Armijo of Evans, Colo.; sisters, Hazel (Robert) Minkel of Traer and Sandra Boomer of Buckingham; 16 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

Louisa Hansen, 97, of Toledo, died Monday evening, February 28, at the MMSC.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 5, at the First Presbyterian Church in Toledo with Pastor Clair Hein officiating. She was be laid to rest in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Toledo. Born Louisa Boege on July 29, 1913, in Lincoln, Iowa, she was one of ten children born to Hans and Mary (Barfels) Boege. She graduated from the Reinbeck High School’s Class of 1930 and the following year from the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. Louisa taught rural schools at Gladbrook-Reinbeck for four years.

On New Year’s Day of 1936, she was united in marriage to Emil Hansen at her Parson’s home. The couple farmed south of Gladbrook before moving to Toledo to farm in the years of WWII. She took an active role in the family farm, milking several cows and raising her family. Mrs. Hansen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Toledo, the church circle and ladies aid, Farm Bureau of Tama County and Farm Bureau Homemakers. She treasured her family and made sure Sunday’s were devoted to family, often having picnics in younger years after church.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: Kenneth Hansen of Toledo, Mary (Ned) Curry of Peekskill, NY, and Dale (Shirley) Hansen of Hartland, Wisc.; ten grandchildren: Terry (Chris), Tina, Tim (Danielle), Ted (Melissa), Tammy (Anthony), Paul, Ryan, Jill, Mike (Marla) and Lee (Sandy); 13 great-grandchildren, her brother Ray (Marlys) Boege of Reinbeck and sister Reva Ladehoff of Conrad as well as many nieces and nephews.

In death, Louisa rejoined her beloved Emil who died in April of 1994, her parents, and siblings Lavera Ramundt, Elvin Boege, Verna Ladehoff, Wilma Claussen, Alta Sindt, Harvey Boege and Ralph Boege.
