Pauline Halverson

Pauline Halverson, 90, Gladbrook, Iowa, died Friday, March 4, 2011, at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home in Gladbrook. Visitation was held Monday, March 7, 2011 at Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook. Funeral services were held at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Garwin, Iowa, on Tuesday, March 8. Burial was in Maple Hill Cmetery, rural Gladbrook, Iowa. Overton Funeral Home, Traer, Iowa, were in charge of the arrangements. A memorial fund has been established. Condolences may be left at www.overtonservice.com. Pauline Rae Halverson was born June 10, 1920 in Geneseo Township in rural Buckingham, IA, daughter of Carl and Florence Speer Stouffer. She attended Consolidated School for 6 years, 2 years in Buckingham and graduated from Geneseo High School in 1937. She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls graduating with a 2 year teaching degree majoring in Elementary Education. She taught school in Dike, Hampton and Jesup. On December 29, 1945 she was married to Raphael Schmitz and they moved to Gladbrook where they farmed with Roy Koster. On June 3, 1949 Raphael was electrocuted and she moved with her 2 daughters to Geneseo where she taught for 5 years. On June 1, 1955 she married Harold Halverson at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marshalltown. They made their home in Gladbrook along with Harold’s two children. Three more children that were born of this marriage. On March 28, 1973 Harold died. While in Gladbrook Pauline worked for several local businesses including the Gladbrook Bowl for over 30 years; for H.D. Osbourne Vet Clinic; and was a bookkeeper for Kenny’s DX, Mooney’s DX, C.W. Gethmann Trucking and Lench Sanitation. She was an active member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garwin where she served as Treasurer of the Rosary Society for 30 years and served on the church Parish Council. She was also a member the Women’s Club holding offices of President and Treasurer for 15 years. She served on the original Gladbrook Housing Board from 1976-1988 serving as Treasurer for 10 years and managed the complex from 1988 to 1995. Pauline was a member of the Gladbrook Legion Auxiliary and served as Chaplain for many years. On July 9, 1995 Pauline suffered a stroke and was hospitalized for 3 months in Iowa City, Waterloo, and Grundy Center. On March 2, 1996 she moved to Eastbrook Apartments and currently was a resident of Westbrook Acres. Pauline’s death came at the care center on Friday evening, March 4, 2011 at the age of 90 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; daughters Kathie Armijo and Donna Brady; daughter-in-law Didee Halverson; and a brother Dean Stouffer. She is survived by her children.
