Obituary

Nadine (Dene) McCrary, 82, of Davenport, Iowa, died Sunday, October 10, 2010 her home in Davenport. Services in Celebration of her Life were held at 10:30 AM Thursday, October 14, 2010 at the Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, 1200 Middle Rd. The family will greeted friends from 4-7:00 PM on Wednesday at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Ill. Memorials may be made to Bettendorf Presbyterian Church Endowment Fund.

Dene was born in 1928 in Beaman, Iowa, to Walter C. and Katherine (Staack) Barfels. She was a 1945 graduate of Reinbeck High School. On February 4, 1949 she married her high school sweetheart, Robert McCrary, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She worked at the Lincoln Iowa Savings Bank until 1949 and then Lincoln Savings Bank in Reinbeck. She and Robert moved to Calif. and she worked at Bank of American, Balboa Peninsula Newport Beach, until returning to Iowa in 1961, when she became a stay-at-home mother. She was a member of Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, Daughters of the Nile, was a charter member of the Befrienders at the former St. Luke’s Hospital, Genesis Auxiliary, Putnam Museum Guild, Left Bank Art League, the Bettendorf Family Museum’s Monday Morning Art League, and Newport Beach California Business Women.

Other joys which enhanced her life were family get-togethers, time with her grandson, Jack Robert McAfoos, her cats and dog, having lunch out with friends, painting in oils, crafts, writing, teaching pre-school children in Sunday school at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian, Newport Beach, Calif., and Bettendorf Presbyterian Church, as well volunteering at Mark Twain Elementary and Bettendorf Middle schools.

Survivors include her daughters, Alison Sue (Dale Hendricks) McCrary of Davenport, and Susan Elizabeth (Jeffrey) McAfoos of Bettendorf, grandson, Jack Robert McAfoos, and a brother, Leo Barfels of Cedar Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
