GMG leads area teams at Hudson

HUDSON – The GMG boys track and field team had five runner-up finishes to land third place in the team standings at the Pirate Relays on Thursday. Individually, the Wolverines had three silvers – Austin Groth in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.81 seconds, Greyson Fraser in the 200 (23.53) and Lansana Mohr in the long jump (18 feet, 7 1/2 inches). In the relay events, GMG was second in the shuttle hurdle (Devon Schuette, Blane Anderson, Kyle Barloon and Groth, 1:03.98) and 4×200 (Schuett, Barloon, Brock Fisher and Fraser, 1:38). Host Hudson had 114.5 points for top team honors, followed by AGWSR (84), GMG (66.5), Denver (63.5) and BCLUW (60). AGWSR won the 4×800 relay in 8:40.23 and later earned first-place team points in the 1,600 and 800 behind Isaac Montes (4:53.01 and 2:07.99, respectively). BCLUW finished second in both the 4×800 (8:44.48) and 1,600 medley (3:44.88), to go with thirds in the shuttle hurdle (1:06.11) and 4×400 (3:37.87). Robert Sharp placed third in the discus at 128-1, while the Comets also won the weight man’s relay race. South Hardin was sixth in the team standings with 56.5 points and was the champion in the shuttle hurdle relay (1:03.30) and the discus after a heave of 138-5 by Bryce Zeisneiss. Grundy Center took seventh with 46 team points and its best finish was Nathan Schmadeke’s gold in the 110 hurdles (15.64). North Tama was 13th (20) and Gladbrook-Reinbeck 15th (15) in the 16-team event. Mitchell Boerm of North Tama won the high jump at 6 feet.
