30 Years Ago March 3, 1989 March 1989 marks 30 years of business for Goos Implement Ltd. Irwin Goos started the business in Gladbrook March of 1959. He bought the Wm. Dahms blacksmith shop on Washington Street and opened Goos Welding and Repair. Greta Klink will celebrate her 90th birthday. Debra Jean Delfs, daughter of Charles and Shirley Delfs, and James William Osborn, son of John and Laura Osborn, all of Gladbrook, were united in marriage on January 28th. Larry Pieper, Rt. 2, Gladbrook, produced a yield of 59.13 bushels per acre to take second place in District 8 of the 1988 Iowa Masters Soybean Growers’ Contest. John and Peggy Hansen of Carol Stream, Illinois, are the parents of a son, Alexander James, born February 10. Alex is welcomed home by a brother Tyler, 5. Grandparents are Otto and Phyllis Hansen of Gladbrook and Lincoln Coffey of Des Moines. Ron and Tena Peters are pleased to announce the birth of their son, Ross Anthony, born February 16. Ross has two brothers Ryan and Rob, to welcome him home. Maternal grandparents are Earl and Barbara Claussen, Gladbrook, and maternal great grandfather, C. B. Matthews of Wichita, Kansas. Paternal grandparents are Art and Pat Rinz of Traer and paternal great grandparents Henry and Irene Junge of Gladbrook and Irma Peters of Reinbeck. 40 Years Ago March 9, 1979 Margaret Anne (Peg) Bott, daughter of Richard and the late Charlotte Bott, Gladbrook, and Gary L. Stanley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Stanley, Marshalltown, wish to announce their engagement and upcoming marriage. Mr. and Mrs. Steven Thomas, Marshalltown, are the parents of a son, Robert Steven, born March 2. The baby has a sister, Nicole Rene, 6. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Frericks, Gladbrook, and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thomas of Hardy, Oklahoma. Great grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Niedermann, Garwin, and Mrs. Robert Orr, Villa DelSol, Marshalltown. LaVerne Rehder, 65, of Gladbrook, passed away Saturday at Marshalltown Area Community Hospital. He had been in his usual health. 50 Years Ago February 21, 1969 George H. Conant, 75, Gladbrook, passed away Sunday afternoon at Mercy Hospital in Marshalltown, where he had been a patient for a week. Mrs. Petersen and her youngest daughter, Laura Kay, were the fifth and sixth members of the family to pass away from carbon monoxide fumes caused by a bird’s nest in the chimney of a gas furnace. Howard Petersen and three sons, Steven, 12, Roger Allen, 5, and Jeffrey Lee, 3, were found dead at the scene. Linda Petersen, 15, has been released from the hospital and is staying with relatives. Mrs. Petersen passed away Sunday morning and Laura passed away Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Schroeder of Gladbrook announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Jeanne Ann, to Darrell R. Paustian, son of Mr. and Mrs. Vern Paustian of Traer. An April 12 wedding is planned. 60 Years Ago February 27, 1959 Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Koester announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Janice, to Mr. Earl Hoing, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Hoing of Garwin. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kline will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Fire gutted the interior of Jay Parsons home in Gladbrook Thursday morning causing extensive damage. Firemen said they believed an overheated furnace pipe started the blaze. It’s not often that a team has an opportunity to go to the State Tournament in consecutive years nor having the same obstacle placed in your path. But tonight, Friday, it will be the same teams, Gladbrook and Eldora clashing in the district finals at Waterloo for the right to represent the area in the Girls State Tournament in Des Moines. 70 Years Ago February 25, 1949 Mr. and Mrs. Kline celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Mary Hoeppner, Reinbeck, celebrated her 82nd birthday. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kline announce the approaching marriage of their daughter, Doris Jean, to Max H. Beck, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Beck, of Toledo. The marriage ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 6. A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. Robert Dean Kline, Marshalltown, at the Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown, Sunday afternoon. C. M. Henry Ohrt, 60, passed away suddenly at the elevator in Reineck, about noon Wednesday. He had not been ill and his death came as shock to his many friends and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Bern, Gladbrook, are the parents of a girl born Thursday at the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital in Marshalltown. Garbage collection is to start in Gladbrook Tuesday, March 1. Approximately sixty-five business houses and homes answered the inquires as willing to pay for this service. 80 Years Ago February 24, 1939 Miss Helen Lovstad, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Lovstad, of Garwin, and Vincent Goetz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Goetz, Sr., of Elma, were united in marriage. Donald Toensfeldt, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Toensfeldt, fell against the stove in his home Wednesday evening and in falling tore his ear so badly that seven stitches were required to close the wound. 90 Years Ago February 28, 1929 A new clothing store will open for business about March 15. Lester Taylor and Gerald Bean bought the Freese Clothing Store. Karl Wieland will open a new Buick garage in the Morgan building. The new company will be known as the Gladbrook Buick Agency. A propose new $40,000 school building is to be voted on Monday, March 11.
