The members of Cub Scout Pack 327 from Gladbrook held their annual family campout on Friday June 5th. Fifteen cub scouts were joined by their parents and siblings at Union Grove State Park, with about 45 people on hand for dinner and campfire program Friday night, and about 30 spending the night and fishing the next morning. As of June 1st the cub scouts have started working on their next rank advancement, so for most this was a good opportunity to get a jump start on next year’s progress. During the campout the scouts learned how to pitch a tent, including selecting an appropriate site. The new Bear den planned and helped cook Friday’s dinner, including dutch oven cake and smores for dessert. The campfire program included each of the dens presenting a skit as well as a group discussion on the principles of Leave No Trace, which emphasizes protecting and respecting nature. The weather was beautiful for camping Friday night, and the Webelos den helped prepare Saturday’s breakfast over the campfire. Because the draining of the lake had been postponed many scouts enjoyed the opportunity to fish with their parents on the state’s Free Fishing Weekend. Scouting is a wonderful program to teach skills and values that will last a lifetime, but support of family and parents is critical to getting the most benefit. The pack has been blessed to have many engaged and helpful parents, and we appreciate their willingness to be involved. We look forward to the adventures that the new program year will bring for our youth!
